Call me crazy, but I’ve always been a writer. I absolutely LOVE to write. There is something so therapeutic about getting your feelings and thoughts down on paper. Going back over past entries to see how far I’ve come has always brought me so much joy. Sometimes looking back at what you’ve been through can empower you for what you’re currently still going through.
Recently I took part in the I Was Busy Now I’m Not Coaching Program by Joseph Peck to expand my leadership skills and learn how to be more effective with my time. In this training, I really captured the importance of keeping a journal, which was something I never thought of before.
So for the past few months, I’ve been very diligent in keeping my journal full of the highs and lows of life. I write down goals and thoughts I have. I write down things I’m discovering and reading. Our brains are wired to retain more if we visually see it, hear it and also write it down.
In any season of life, let’s face it.. we have stress. I think sometimes we stress ourselves out with the perspective we’re having about a situation. My journal forces me to give myself a detailed account of the perspective I have. Going back and reviewing it, I can see patterns in my perspective that are making me stressed, and then I can adjust my thinking.
If you need a reality check, take this week and journal once a day for five minutes a day about your day. Once that week is over, look back at what you said. Can you change something that will make everything else easier or unnecessary?
