Anxiety Doesn't Have To Suck

Hi guys! As some of you may or may not know, this past year I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. For most people who have it, it can literally paralyze you at times from living your life. Sometimes even beginning your day is a small victory in and of itself. Once when I described the feeling of it to someone who has never experienced it who was trying to understand, I told them that it’s like your mind is just “noisy” and racing with thoughts all the time and you can’t control it.

... or can you?

I want to make something very clear. I am in no way a doctor by any means, but coming from a psychology background, I’ve always been incredibly interested in alternative ways to kick these kinds of things to the curb. Did you know that some people even play Bejeweled during a panic attack to slow down or stop their symptoms? We’ve all heard about breathing exercises, meditation techniques, etcetera, but for me, I needed something different. I needed to feel like there was another way besides medicine all the time.

In my research, I found that things like your diet can affect your anxiety and that getting the proper nutrition can change how you feel dramatically. I’ve learned sometimes that even though you may feel like you’re the only person in the world who feels these things or thinks these things when no one else seems to understand you, the best thing you can do is to tell people about it because you might find that this a VERY common thing among a lot of people.

We’ve all heard about breathing exercises, meditation techniques, etcetera, but for me, I needed something different. I needed to feel like there was another way besides medicine all the time.

So if you were diagnosed with this new thing and you feel like you have this huge LABEL on your life that is LIMITING you, I’m here to tell you that I’ve BEEN there. God doesn’t make mistakes and therefore you are just wired a little differently. Everyone has his or her own little quirk.

Most of you have seen that I traveled to Florida this past week. Did you know that I used to get crippling anxiety even THINKING about being on a plane? You read that right, EVEN THINKING!! So for two years I played the avoidance game. I made every excuse in the book to not get on a plane. You know what that got me? It got me more afraid than I was to begin with. So what did I do? I faced my fear, head on. Was it easy? No. Did I try to get out of it? Yes. But let me tell you something, I have NEVER felt more victory over my life than I did when that plane landed in Florida and I had made it there, despite my fears. It felt like I imagine winning the lottery might feel.

Is there something holding you back? I bet you were looking for a magic potion or maybe even a diet plan that would help you kick your anxiety in this post. It starts with a decision. It starts with YOU. Do you want to get better? Today I challenge you to TEAR off that label. Get rid of it. Flush that sucker down the toilet. It does NOT define you. Feel the fear and do it ANYWAY. YOU are an overcomer. Will it be easy for you? No. Nothing worth having or doing is EVER easy, but I promise you, once you make that decision, every small step, every small victory, will lead to you recovering. I promise you.

"You are an overcomer."

If you are someone who is struggling with fear or know someone who is, I would love to pray for you. Please leave a comment below. You don’t have to name them, but I ask that you share this with them.

Much love,
Caity. :)
