One of the biggest light-bulb-going-off moments in my business was the moment I realized how our small actions day-in and day-out matter way more in the grander scheme of things. What do I mean? I think small actions consistently over time are better than massive action in spurts. It’s important to have goals and know where we are headed, but how do we get there? One step at a time.
It reminds me of the tortoise and the hare story from when I was younger. The hare started off really strong, but ultimately he burned himself out before ever reaching the finish line. The tortoise, on the other hand, started seemingly slow, but he’s the one who actually finished. Friends, it’s important to remember that there is a season for massive action, but we need to be mindful of burnout.
How do we avoid this? Each day, keep a list of the six things you’d like to accomplish that day, and be sure to think of things that aren’t just busy work. Six honest to goodness, propelling-you-forward, action-type things. You’ll find that you’ll accomplish things faster when you have a game plan! Consistently do that for 30 days.
Then what? We wait. “But Caity, what do you mean, 'wait?' I just put in all that effort.” Your actions have a compounding effect. One of my favorite examples of this is the story about Chinese bamboo. For five years the seed is laid down, watered, tended to, etcetera, but nothing happens, but below the surface, there are roots being grown deep into the ground. Suddenly, one day out of seemingly nowhere, a huge bamboo stalk shoots up out of the ground! Did anything change? No. They were still tending to it with small tasks each day, but look at what that created.
It is the same with your home-based business. What you do today matters tomorrow and the next day and the next month and the next year. You get the picture. Keep your eyes fixed upon the bigger picture, make sure you are consistently doing something daily and I promise you that burn out will not happen and at the end of the day, success is inevitable.
Be blessed! ☺
