For all your speed readers out there, here are the basics: I’m 25-years-old, the wife and daughter of some pretty awesome business-minded people, and a “puppy mom” to Pepper the Cheagle. (A Chihuahua / Beagle – weird, right?) Nice to meet you!
Hi, I’m Caity!
Growing up, I lived all around northern New Jersey, but I spent the majority of my childhood in Sussex County, NJ -- there aren’t many people, but there are plenty of cows and a bunch of green stuff! I mean, how many of you can say that there’s a “cow crossing” near your house?
I’ve always loved the creative arts – chorus, theater… stuff like that. I enjoyed leading Sunday School classes and I participated in Youth Group at my church. I guess you can say I was pretty active in my community since I loved being around people.
This was just a handful of the activities that I was involved in, but my mom instilled in me at an early age that I needed to follow through with all the things that I started. If I signed up to do something, she’d always make me finish it.
I found my love for psychology back in high school, but I didn’t declare it as my major until part way into college. I loved the idea of learning why people act the way that they do, and I thought it was important for me to be able to help and teach others.
At my very first job at a local pizza place, I began to develop my values of hard work and responsibility that were established by both of my parents. By the time I turned 18, I was still in high school, but I was given a management position and keys to the store at my next job.
While I was in college, I was attending classes full-time AND working full-time as a retail manager. I was feeling overwhelmed by my schedule and I wasn’t being paid what I thought I was worth.
My boyfriend (now husband) Dan was a retail manager at the time as well, so we’d often say hello in passing due to our opposite schedules. Our work, school, and commuting schedules almost never coincided. His store was in the process of liquidating, and his fledgling photography business hadn’t really developed yet, so unfortunately, our weekly routine left us wondering what good things the future might hold, if anything.
One day, my mom called me up asking me to check out this new company that she was looking into. At the time, her old company (that she’d roped me into!) was slowly going out of business, and I wanted nothing to do with this new “opportunity” that she had on her hands. I love my mom, but when she told me I could put this “thing” on my body and get skinny, I swore she was going crazy!
After contacting me five different times, my mom finally convinced me to give this “wrap” a shot by offering to let me try one at a discounted rate! (Hey – in college, “discounted” is the perfect price for just about everything.) It was affordable (on my super-awesome retail salary) and it sounded too good to be true, so I knew I could prove my mom wrong once and for all! :)
Spoiler alert: I was wrong. Way wrong. My results were unbelievable! After I posted my before and after photos online, everyone’s excitement about this product was overwhelming! I knew that I really had my hands on something special, at a time when I needed a source of income where I knew I’d be paid for the amount of work that I put into it.
With mixed emotions – mostly a concoction of terror and relief! – I quit my full-time job at age 22.
The Early Stages
When I signed up, the company was in the middle of a 400% growth in distributors, so we actually ran out of product! They were calling it a “drought!” I saw how high the demand was for these wraps, so I started talking to my closest friends and family about what they had done for me so far. When I say that people were literally throwing money at me, I wish I was exaggerating! Before I knew it, I was getting paid for products that I didn’t even have in my hands yet!
After that, I knew I had to get wraps on as many people as I could, but I didn’t have anywhere to do it at home. Filled with enthusiasm (and some ignorance on fire), I went out into the world and made do with what I had. I found myself wrapping people in the parking lot of a shopping mall, the back seat of my car, and public restrooms! People must have thought I was crazy, but I was up for the challenge!
Before I actually had to market my business and myself, Dan didn’t really have an opinion on the business or the products. He supported me in my efforts, but it wasn’t really an interest of his. Slowly, Dan started helping me build up my knowledge base of marketing tips and tricks – specifically social media marketing and branding. He’d had a full-time job running the social media channels for a large camera equipment reseller, so he’d been spending countless hours learning how to reach out to new audiences while retaining existing ones. We worked hard to sculpt these skills into our business, uniting them with our combined knowledge of customer service and sales.
Now, don’t get me wrong – that all sounds good on paper, but contacting people about the products or the business was terrifying, even when they’d asked me for information flat out! Through personal and professional development, I was able to “get over myself” and work through a lot of the things that scared me the most. Most recently, I’ve been able to achieve one of my biggest dreams to date, moving into an incredible house with Dan, and planning our dream wedding: debt-free.
So what drives me now? Being able to give that same freedom to other people that we've been given. We have a very simple roadmap for success. You just have to be driven and coachable and the rest is history.
